Austin, TX – 20 January 2016 – The Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) and One Mind are pleased to announce the availability of version 1.0 of the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) research data standard, openly accessible on the CDISC website. The TBI standard was developed by a consortium of medical and technical experts to enable the harmonization of clinical data pertaining to TBI studies, streamlining research processes and improving analysis capabilities to ensure accelerated learning, better science, and to advance treatments for patients with TBI. This achievement will pave the way for related standards, such as for Post-Traumatic Stress, which will be the focus of a fundraiser on 03 March 2016 at the Texas Medical Association building in Austin, Texas.
Traumatic Brain Injury affects more than 2.5 million people each year, in the United States alone. Added to this, the majority of results from research being conducted on TBI cannot be shared effectively with other researchers in the field of neurology and mental health because the data does not speak the same language across studies. Of course, publications can be shared, but the actual data are needed for appropriate interpretation. The TBI research data standard enables the aggregation and comparison of TBI data across studies and drug programs by describing the common kinds of data needed for traumatic brain injury studies, and defining concepts in a clear, unambiguous way. Utilization of CDISC standards in clinical research studies has been found to significantly reduce the time and cost associated with research, while improving quality, and enabling the more rapid development of medical products and therapies for patients.
“There have been 320,000 military TBI cases since 9/11, which is a huge issue for the military. However, that doesn’t include the 2.5 million people who are affected by TBIs in the United States each year. This is also a big problem,” General Peter Chiarelli (Retired), One Mind CEO, commented. “Creating a research data standard for TBI is a great step in advancing a research paradigm that will forever change the way we conduct research and fund programs to cure all diseases.”

CDISC and One Mind will continue their collaboration through 2016, working together to develop two more standards related to mental health for Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and Major Depressive Disorder. To support these efforts, CDISC and One Mind will be co-hosting a public benefit on 03 March 2016 in Austin, Texas, entitled: Cowboy Up! An Evening of Collaboration for PTS & Mental Health Research. The event is kindly being sponsored by a number of generous contributors, including the Audie Murphy Chapter of the Association of the United States Army. Thought leaders on mental health will speak during the event, including General Peter Chiarelli (Ret.), One Mind CEO; TBI patient and advocate Sergeant First Class Victor Medina (Ret.); advocate Roxanna Delgado, PhD; and Clay Johnston, MD, PhD, Dean of the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin. The event will also feature live music from local artists, as well as hors d’oeuvres and drinks from Austin establishments.
